I had a loose dowel pin and a leaking seal. It could be loose, or in the worst case scenario, it could have fallen out and broken the case. Sometimes the dowel pin falls out and doesn't do anything. Either way you have to take the front cover off and look. I have a '96 that had a pretty bad leak, and everyone told me it was the dowel pin. My friend says that this is common and a very time consuming costly repair as the front of the truck has to be stripped down, thenstrip down the front of the engine and replace the gearcase housing and dowel pin. He says most likely that a dowel pin has worked loose on the front of the block and actuallycame out and fallen into the gearcase, where a gear has struck the dowel pin and pushed it through the gearcase cover.
Well anyway, on the way home I called a friend, former cummins employee, who told me this was unlikely that he had seen very few with a bad crankshaft seal in the front cover. The neighbor I bought it from told me it did and he said it was the seal in the front cover leaking and that he had already bought the seal and just hadnt had time to install it. This one has a severe oil leak on the front of the engine. We have had 7 of these before this one and never had an oil leak. Yesterday I bought a Dodge truck with a 5.9 Cummins as an extra truck to keep around the farm.
